Population trends: Between the years of 1950 and 1990 the population pyramid doesn't show much change. the shape resembles the shape in the bottom left corner of the demographic transition model picture below. Ages 0-4 are the widest, gradually becoming thinner towards the tip.
Historical Explanation of population trends: Over the 40 years being researched, South Africa experienced a lot of racial tension. In 1950, the country was classified by race. After this, many rebellious acts occurred including the assassination of Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd. These racial tensions may have caused the population pyramids to change the way they did. The population of 30-44 years of age changes more over the decades more than any other age group.
Demographic Transition Model: South Africa is considered in stage 1 of the Demographic transition model because the birth rate and death rate are extremely high. The dangerous living conditions and constant spread of disease make it difficult to sustain life there, causing people to die much faster than in wealthier countries where resources to combat these factors such as health care and medicines. Because the death rate is so high, the birth rate must remain high as well to sustain a large enough community. This causes many children to join the work force at an early age. School completion rates are low in South Africa because education is not the main focus. Older people need the size and energy of children to do the work they can no longer do.
